Investors, analysts and anybody whose job it is to get to the heart of what’s going on in markets and the competitive landscape knows the drill: there’s an ocean of information, but everything depends on finding those key kernels of insights.
That’s why it was such a pleasure for me to sit down with Chris Ackerson, the head of product and search for AI here at AlphaSense. Chris and I hosted a candid webinar looking at how next-generation AI focused on financial markets – the type that AlphaSense has been pioneering for the last decade – is now in a position to overhaul the fundamental research process, much as technology changed quantitative investing more than a decade ago.
Some of the key insights Chris went over:
Dean Foods (DF) has been a company that is top of mind for many investors, with shares off 80% since the start of the year. Chris used sentiment analysis to pinpoint the management commentary and financial disclosures that were impacting the stock.
The Finance sector has been key for the markets this year. Chris used Sentiment Analysis to see which companies had among the biggest losses and gains in Sentiment over the last quarter – and cut to key investor concerns.
The Interest Rate theme has been a key issue for Financials. Chris used Sentiment Smart Synonym to identify how companies were discussing the interest rate environment both negatively and positively.
Chris set up alerts so AlphaSense could be working for him – even when he wasn’t working it.
The lively audience had plenty of insightful questions, including:
How do you apply sentiment analysis at the industry-level?
You can look at industry level sentiment trends in AlphaSense by filtering your search by Industry and by limiting your Sources to transcripts only. From there, you can sort the resulting transcripts by positive to negative sentiment (+/-) or by the biggest change in sentiment since the previous quarter (Δ).
Is it possible to download negative sentiment or positive sentiment commentary?
Yes, in AlphaSense you can download transcripts annotated with red and green highlighting that indicates negative/positive sentiment. Click the download arrow in the document viewer (right side of the page) in AlphaSense.
Beyond transcripts, what other content sets sentiment analysis be applied to in AlphaSense?
With Sentiment Smart Synonyms you can surface negative or positive commentary on a keyword (so any topic or trend) from mentions across content sets including news and regulatory filings.
